SOUND
Vocabulary
Medium- material through which a wave transfer energy
Wavelength- distance between one point in a wave and the nearest point just like it
Compressional Wave- wave in which matter in the medium moves back and forth in the same direction the wave travels
Vibration (waves)- repeating disturbances that transfer energy through matter or space
Compression- region where the medium is crowded and dense in a compressional wave
Amplitude- measure of the energy in a wave
Frequency- measure of how many wavelengths pass a fixed point each second
Does sound travel in space? No, because there is no medium for energy to be transferred through
Sound waves are a mechanical type of wave
Waves carry energy
What makes some sound waves louder than others? Louder waves have more energy or higher amplitudes
Speed of Sound:
Fastest in Solids, then next in liquids, slowest in gases (speed of sound is fastest in materials that are more dense)
** to change the speed of sound in a specific medium I can heat it (as a substance is heated the particles move faster, which increases the speed of sound)
Relationships
Long wavelength = Low Frequency = Low Pitch
Short Wavelength = High Frequency = High Pitch
